How a Himalayan Palm Civet got its head stuck in a plastic food container due to a landslide

 On 22Mar2021, at around 11.00am I was alerted that a strange animal which looked like a rhesus monkey (which are regular, unwanted guests around my home) had its head stuck inside a plastic container and was on a tree in the vicinity of my land at Tirpai, Kalimpong. I checked and quickly took some telephoto images of the helpless animal which I sent off to a friend and an official in the W Bengal Forest Department.
The animal turned out to be large Himalayan palm civet from the jungle bordering my home and it was apparently rummaging for food in the waste dump nearby. Having found an empty plastic food container, it climbed back onto the tree and tried eating some food inside the jar and in the process got its head stuck inside the jar which turned into a veritable noose around its neck which would slowly dehydrate and asphyxiate the beast in a most efficient and cruel manner.

So how did the Himalayan civet nearly choke to death after getting its head stuck in a plastic container?
Well, that's the story of Kalimpong's unending waste disposal problem which started with a garbage dump landslide in Sep2007.

Rainfall data of the Darjeeling- Sikkim Himalayas - OCT2019

As can be seen, our region has started its descent into the long, dry months ahead, the impacts of which will undoubtedly be felt in the availability of water in the mountains which will in turn affect the water and food security of the Darjeeling - Sikkim Himalaya.
This chain of events will continue the now familiar viscous cycle of migration of youth to urban centers in search of better livelihoods and opportunities and the decline of the agriculture in our area.
There were no landslides in OCT 2019 in this area.

Mechanical extraction of water by drilling in Kalimpong : The need for caution (Interview in KalimpongTv)

Water security in the Himalayas will in the future be a humongous problem with documented information that springs which are our life line for water in the mountains, drying up at an alarming rate. Even a cursory check carried out by STH in and around Kalimpong revealed that many perennial springs had become seasonal and many seasonal ones had dried up. The reasons are many, one of them being the changing rainfall patterns which now gives us 5 months of abundant rainfall followed by almost 7 months of drought.
This in turn has led to a severe water crisis in the town with some desperate people turning to drilling for water within the Kalimpong town municipal limits.
STH along with a group of people had voiced our concerns on the drilling because:-
a. The extraction was being done without a proper study of the aquifer system and unregulated extraction of water at the crest could adversely affect downstream communities.
b. There was no mechanism in place to regulate the number of bore wells or the amount of water that could be extracted.
c. There was no word on recharging the aquifer system/springs or the need to protect recharge areas.
d. There was no word on testing the quality of water.

El Nino for dummies

The global El Niño weather phenomenon, whose impacts cause global famines, floods – and even wars – now has a 90% chance of striking this year, according to the latest forecast released to the Guardian.
El Niño begins as a giant pool of warm water swelling in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, that sets off a chain reaction of weather events around the world – some devastating and some beneficial.
India is expected to be the first to suffer, with weaker monsoon rains undermining the nation’s fragile food supply, followed by further scorching droughts in Australia and collapsing fisheries off South America. But some regions could benefit, in particular the US, where El Niño is seen as the “great wet hope” whose rains could break the searing drought in the west.
What is El Niño
The knock-on effects can have impacts even more widely, from cutting global gold prices to making England’s World Cup footballers sweat a little more.
The latest El Niño prediction comes from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), which is considered one the most reliable of the 15 or so prediction centres around the world. “It is very much odds-on for an event,” said Tim Stockdale, principal scientist at ECMWF, who said 90% of their scenarios now deliver an El Niño. "The amount of warm water in the Pacific is now significant, perhaps the biggest since the 1997-98 event.” That El Niño was the biggest in a century, producing the hottest year on record at the time and major global impacts, including a mass die-off of corals.
“But what is very much unknowable at this stage is whether this year’s El Niño will be a small event, a moderate event – that’s most likely – or a really major event,” said Stockdale, adding the picture will become clearer in the next month or two. “It is which way the winds blow that determines what happens next and there is always a random element to the winds.”
The movement of hot, rain-bringing water to the eastern Pacific ramps up the risk of downpours in the nations flanking that side of the great ocean, while the normally damp western flank dries out. Governments, commodity traders, insurers and aid groups like the Red Cross and World Food Programme all monitor developments closely and water conservation and food stockpiling is already underway in some countries.
Professor Axel Timmermann, an oceanographer at the University of Hawaii, argues that a major El Niño is more likely than not, because of the specific pattern of winds and warm water being seen in the Pacific. “In the past, such alignments have always triggered strong El Niño events,” he said.
El Niño events occur every five years or so and peak in December, but the first, and potentially greatest, human impacts are felt in India. The reliance of its 1 billion-strong population on the monsoon, which usually sweeps up over the southern tip of the sub-continent around 1 June, has led its monitoring to be dubbed “the most important weather forecast in the world”. This year, it is has already got off to a delayed start, with the first week’s rains 40% below average.

Deficient rainfall, monsoon progress and formation of the first LOPAR of 2014 in the Bay of Bengal


The Darjeeling - Sikkim Himalaya is running anywhere from 56% deficient during the winter of 2013 to 31% deficient in Mar-May2014 (see top map) in rainfall. This has resulted in the maize crop being stunted and dwarfed in many parts of rural Kalimpong, a severe adverse effect in the tea industry and  a critical shortage in potable water in all the urban centres of the district.
In this background, the formation of 'a low pressure area over east central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood, an associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mean troposphere' (see above) maybe a welcome sign of rain in the days ahead.

Text book example : How Politics and Politicians impact Management of Disasters.

As I write there is a deep depression brewing up in the Bay of Bengal and in order to ascertain rainfall data associated with the depression (which is likely to be upgraded to a tropical cyclone today), I checked the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) website.
I found the main TRMM website (http://trmm.jpl.nasa.gov/) unavailable and the TRMM website which was available (see above) had a cautionary note on it which said the "data may not be upto date" due to the US Govt shutdown. In fact, the website had information which was 9 days old and its latest images were of Typhoon USAGI of 30Sep2013.
So vital information on Typhoon FITOW (08Oct2013) was missing on the TRMM site as was information on the depression
in the Bay of Bengal, slowly working its way up from the Andaman islands to mainland India  - thanks to politics and politicians!
In this context, the Darjeeling hills has been embroiled in  grim political turmoil for several years now and management of the very serious landslide problem of this region has been confined to a tiny, dark corner in the minds of politicians involved.
