Commencing 02Jun2023, four IIT (Mandi) students are interning with SaveTheHills for around a month, so our activities have been interwoven with their training schedule.
For their benefit as well as for the students of Cluny Women's College, Kalimpong, we asked renowned academic Prof Sarah Besky of Cornell University (who was Kalimpong for her own research work) to talk about the 'Impact of tourism on Rural Communities'

05Jun2023: World Environment Day (Theme: Solutions to Plastic Pollution)

Along with AIWC (Kalimpong Branch) we organized an awareness program in DISHA Center, Kalimpong:

 

 

07Jun2023: Study tour to the NHPC's Teesta Low Dam Project III with 11 students (of IIT - Mandi and Siliguri College)

Events of Nov2021 and STH activities

Raising awareness on extreme rainfall and environment thru social media
Nov2021 saw a number of storms develop in the Bay which resulted in extraordinary rains in Tamil Nadu

STH activity : Hosting the Sustainable Mountain Development Summit (SMDS X) in Darjeeling and Kalimpong as a part of DHI
The Darjeeling Himalaya Initiative (DHI) is the state chapter of West Bengal in IMI (Integrated Mountain Initiative) and STH is a part of DHI.
DHI hosted the 10th SMDS between 18-20Nov2021 and later on 11Dec2021 (International Mountain Day) in Darjeeling and Kalimpong and being a part of DHI, STH took active part in  the summit.

Rainfall in Nov2021
No rainfall in Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Kurseong. Heavy rain was reported near Sevoke and Kalijhora on 22Nov due to which there was a blockage of NH10.
Jaldhaka reported 14.9mm rain on 27Nov2021

STH ACTIVITIES (16Jul2013): Educating the Trainers - Awareness camp and field visit with members of 10/12 battalion WB SDRF (State Disaster Response Force)

STH held an awareness camp for 14 members (including two officers) from 10/12 battalion Armed Police who have recently been the assigned the role of the West Bengal SDRF (State Disaster Response Force). As is known during non-disaster periods eg the dry winter months, a primary role of both the national and state disaster response forces is training of communities/ NGOs.
The subjects covered in the presentation were the structure of the DM organization in India, cause and effect of landslides, their prevention and mitigation and landslides zones in the vicinity of Kalimpong town.
This was followed by a field visit to the landslide prone areas at  Dhobi Dhara and Chibbo - Pashyor .
STH has worked with the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) in the past in raising awareness about disasters and community capacity building (Seen here and here) and hopes to do the same with the SDRF too. 
Special thanks goes to Anand from Compassion International and the SDRF group that came all the way from Siliguri to attend the session.

STH activities in Kalimpong

A contingent of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is in Kalimpong for the entire week (13May-17May2013) carrying out their "peacetime" role of training, capacity building and raising awareness about disasters.
STH was extremely glad to work alongside them as a local coordinator and took advantage of the NDRF visit to talk about cyclones and Cyclone MAHASEN in particular as it roars through the Bay of Bengal.
Several thousand school children and citizens of Kalimpong would be more aware about disasters, cyclones and the NDRF by the end of the week.
